Perfection is the ultimate goal of Team Vulcan, and in order to achieve that we decided that we needed better resources and professional advice. We are sponsored by University of Wales Trinity Saint David and we were aware that the university possesses a very high quality motorsport department in Swansea. Dafydd contacted the university and was passed on to Mr Timothy Tudor, an expert in aerodynamics, computational simulation, finite element analysis, chassis and suspension system design who is a lecturer at the university.

We were kindly invited to meet with Mr Tudor on the 9th of November, 2018, in the newly-built motorsport campus in Swansea. The day started with an extremely interesting and very useful lecture on aerodynamics and some professional feedback on the car we had sent Mr Tudor online. We learnt a lot about pressure, drag and friction and techniques to reduce these. Then, we were kindly allowed to pass 2 cars through the university's wind tunnel. We could then see where the air flowed smoothly across the car, but more importantly the areas of turbulence on the car. This was very useful because we could see before our eyes where changes and adaptations were needed.

We were very grateful to have a detailed tour of the motorsport facilities in the campus. We learnt a great deal about the work that the university's students have to do when studying motorsport. We also saw the university's various racing cars and also saw the highly sophisticated driving simulator that the race teams use. We were very surprised to see that the work they do at the university is not too different to the work we do for F1 in Schools regarding designing, sponsorship and marketing except on a bigger scale.

 

The university were very generous to us and have accepted to receive us again and pass our cars through a virtual and physical wind tunnel. We are extremely thankful to the university's offer of sponsorship and partnership and we look forward to working closely throughout this season.
